On October 7, our school community came together to honour the one-year anniversary of the tragic attacks in Israel—a day that has profoundly affected our community and has left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.
The day included a meaningful assembly and a deeply impactful installation organized by the Israel Council, a group of students led by Israel Engagement Shlicha Shira Meirman. Both aimed to foster reflection, learning, and healing through music, prayer, and powerful firsthand accounts from survivors.
Yuval Zhitnikov, a Grade 11 student and proud member of the Israel Council, helped plan the events. Yuval says, “Educating students about events, history, and traditions is the best way to allow them to accept Judaism and embrace themselves within this magnificent religion of spirit, strength, and hope.”
A particularly moving moment came from Noa and Noam Chanukah, who bravely shared their harrowing survival story from Kibbutz Mefalsim. Noam, injured by terrorist gunfire, and Noa, nine months pregnant at the time, exemplified strength, hope and resilience. Against all odds, they survived, and are now proud parents of a beautiful one-year-old boy. Their journey resonated deeply with everyone present, reinforcing our community’s strength and unwavering solidarity with Israel.
Additionally, the Nova Festival installation spanned the week of October 7, allowing students and staff the time and space to immerse themselves in the events of that day. The exhibit left a profound impact on all who took the time to explore it.This somber day served as a poignant reminder of our shared history and the incredible resilience of the Jewish people. It reaffirmed our commitment to unity, hope, and resilience within our community. Am Yisrael Chai.
