A Shared Moment of  Remembrance and Hope

On October 16, the National Day of Remembrance, the TanenbaumCHAT community came together to mark the second anniversary of October 7—a day forever etched into the fabric of Jewish history and one that we, as the Jewish people, will never forget. United in song, prayer, and reflection, students and staff gathered to remember, to mourn, to celebrate the return of the living hostages, and to reaffirm their unwavering connection to Am Yisrael.

The assembly featured a deeply moving personal story from teacher Danya Koplowitz ’08, who spoke about her cousin, Ori Moshe Borenstein z”l, and the enduring legacy his life has left behind. Through her words, she reminded us of our sacred responsibility to carry forward the memory of those we have lost,  and to find strength in Jewish unity as we move forward.

Heartfelt musical tributes and prayers created moments of collective reflection, while Head of School, Dr. Jonathan Levy, spoke about the resilience of our people and the ongoing work of strengthening our bond with Israel. “Our connection has deepened,” he shared, “but our work is far from over.”

After two years of prayer and advocacy, all living hostages have finally come home—to their families and to their extended family of Am Yisrael.

Following the assembly, the community gathered on the Himel Sports Field, forming a giant Magen David from 1,200 Israeli flags—each representing a life lost—and releasing yellow balloons in a powerful act of unity, remembrance, and hope.

This day will forever be a part of our shared history, a testament to our collective strength, resilience, and enduring hope for a bright and peaceful future.
