A Family’s Gift to TanenbaumCHAT
For the Muller family, TanenbaumCHAT has never just been a school—it’s been a legacy. A bridge connecting generations through shared values, education, and experience.
When Eva and Louis z”l Muller immigrated to Canada in 1957, they brought with them determination, hope, and a deep sense of Jewish pride—but without the privilege of a Jewish education themselves. They were committed to ensuring that their children Bill ’77, Robert ’83, and Steven ’88 would have the Jewish education they never had. All three sons attended Jewish day school and graduated from TanenbaumCHAT. That legacy continues through their grandchildren. Bill’s children—Susie ’05, Andrew ’09, and Benjamin ’12— and Steven’s children—Jesse ’17, Anna ’19, and Jacob ’22—are all proud TanenbaumCHAT alumni. To honour Louis Muller z”l, Bill and his wife Joy Muller made a meaningful donation to name the Physical Education office—a gift rooted in memory and meaning.
We asked Bill and Joy about their motivation for this generous gift.
Why support TanenbaumCHAT?
The TanenbaumCHAT of today is not the same school that my brothers and I attended. While its strong academic foundation remains, the school has grown into a vibrant place full of extracurricular activities, sports teams, clubs, alumni initiatives, and so much more. It provides students with the space to grow not only academically, but socially as well. That well-rounded experience fosters a sense of community that’s more important now than ever. Joy and I believe that by supporting TanenbaumCHAT, we are strengthening the educational experience, reinforcing community ties, preserving traditions, and making a lasting impact on the Jewish community.
What role do you feel the school plays in the Jewish community of the GTA?
TanenbaumCHAT is much more than a school—it is a place that plays a central and lasting role in Toronto’s Jewish community. Beyond its academics and extracurriculars, it’s a place where students deeply connect with their Jewish identity and traditions, forming friendships that often last for decades. TanenbaumCHAT brings people together, helping to build a strong and united community while ensuring that Jewish values are passed on to future generations. It is so much more than a school—it’s a meaningful part of the local Jewish experience.
To support TanenbaumCHAT is to strengthen the very fabric of our community. It’s about more than academics; it’s about identity, connection, and continuity. For my family, TanenbaumCHAT isn’t just part of our past—it’s a commitment to our collective future.”
