Alumni in Israel

Professor Marty Lockshin ’69 credits TanenbaumCHAT with giving him fluency in Hebrew, meaningful Jewish learning, and a love of Israel that has shaped his personal and professional life. Before making aliyah in 2015, he enjoyed a distinguished 38-year career at York University, where he served as a professor, eventually becoming Director of the Centre for Jewish Studies and later the Chair of the Department of Humanities. Lockshin remained connected to TanenbaumCHAT through educational committees and by teaching future educators who would eventually become teachers at the school. Now living in Israel, he teaches at Givat Washington Educational College near Ashdod, in a Hebrew-speaking environment, and continues to publish academic articles. To this day, he still quotes his teachers from TanenbaumCHAT—proof that a meaningful high school experience can have a lifelong impact.
